Air contains 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen, 0.9% argon and 0.1% other trace gases. Oxygen generators separate this oxygen from compressed air through a unique process called pressure swing adsorption. (PSA).
The pressure swing adsorption process, which produces oxygen-enriched gas from ambient air, utilizes the ability of synthetic zeolite molecular sieves to absorb primarily nitrogen. Oxygen is produced as a product when nitrogen is concentrated in the zeolite's pore system.
The oxygen generator uses two vessels containing zeolite molecular sieves as adsorbents. Molecular sieves selectively adsorb nitrogen as the compressed air passes upward through one of the adsorbers. This then allows the remaining oxygen to pass up the adsorber and exit as product gas. When the adsorber was saturated with nitrogen, the inlet gas flow was switched to the second adsorber. The first adsorber is regenerated by desorbing nitrogen at reduced pressure and purging with some product oxygen. The cycle is then repeated, with the pressure oscillating between higher levels for adsorption (production) and lower levels for desorption (regeneration).
